2D animation is not the past. It’s the foundation. Before a 3D character ever moves on screen, it has to act. And that acting often starts in 2D. Here’s a great example from Moana. This is a 2D reference scene animated by the great Randy Haycock, created to help guide the 3D animators. Why does this matter? Because 2D animation strips things down to their essentials: timing, rhythm, clarity, weight, appeal, and emotion. It’s pure performance, no rendering, no shaders, no shortcuts. 3D animation doesn’t replace that. It stands on it. This kind of 2D reference helps 3D animators find the heart of a scene before translating it into volume and space. It’s one of the reasons great animation still feels alive, believable, and human. Different tools. Same principles. Good animation is good animation.
